Focus on Plants - Canada Red Chokecherry

Canada Red Chokecherry

One of my all time favorite trees is the Canada Red Chokecherry (and it’s not my favorite because I am originally from Canada).  It is one of the first trees to leaf out in spring. The new green leafs add a great backdrop for the white fragrant flowerings. In June the green leaves start to turn purple. The tree does produce small chokecherries that the birds love. In the fall time, the purple leaves start to take on a purple-red tint. This is a fairly fast growing tree with an approximate mature size of 30’ high by 20’ wide. The tree does have a tendency to sucker from the base, but it is very controllable if kept in check. If you would like to add fragrance to your garden in early spring, and changing leaf color through the growing season, why not try the Canada Red Chokecherry?
